‘Vince Giordano,’ a Nostalgist With Fresh Takes on Jazz

As you absorb the buoyant ’20s and ’30s jazz bubbling through the documentary “Vince Giordano: There’s a Future in the Past,” you may well wonder if this is the happiest American music ever created. It’s a peppy, carefree sound that conveys a frantic energy but is rendered with a light touch. Born and based in Brooklyn, Mr. Giordano, 64, has been leading the Nighthawks, his 11-piece band specializing in the pre-swing era, for nearly four decades. He plays several instruments, including tuba, string bass and bass saxophone, and sings in a voice that evokes a less rambunctious Fats Waller. His popularity playing hotels has spawned a subculture of young fans who flock to his performances in period dress. You probably know the music of this passionate preservationist, which has been featured in Woody Allen’s movies and the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire.” His devotion to stylistic authenticity infuses his band’s performances to the degree that, to quote a ’70s pop song title, “everything old is new again.” Played with such vigor and attention to detail, it sounds utterly fresh. Much of the space in Mr. Giordano’s Brooklyn apartment is devoted to his ever-growing, meticulously annotated collection of 60,000 big-band arrangements. They are culled from his extensive search for original manuscripts and radio transcriptions of music that the film calls hot jazz. What the singer, pianist and cabaret performer Michael Feinstein is to vintage popular songs, Mr. Giordano is to hot jazz. “There’s a Future in the Past” is a ground-level exploration of this historian at work, leading the Nighthawks or one of their satellite ensembles and traveling the country to examine and rescue old arrangements that have turned up in radio station archives and musicians’ basements. What others would dismiss as trash is the equivalent of discovering gold to Mr. Giordano. This movie, directed and produced by Dave Davidson and Amber Edwards, digs deeply enough into Mr. Giordano’s world to convey the drudgery and headaches of being a bandleader: juggling personnel, scheduling, dealing with a musicians’ union and lugging around instruments. But for all the players’ expertise and devotion, their profession won’t make them rich and famous. They do it for love. The most memorable performances are carried by a mysterious lilt that makes them the next best thing to dancing on air. Vince Giordano: There’s a Future in the Past – NYT Critic’s Pick

Time: 8:15pm. World Premiere: Manchester International Film Festival on Saturday, March 5th, 8:15pm Documentary Film “Vince Giordano – There’s a Future in the Past” The festival organizers are bringing over the filmmakers Amber Edwards, Dave Davidson and myself (Vince) to walk the red carpet! We are thrilled, and so grateful to all the supporters who gave, and gave again, to see this project through. The Manchester planners have given the film a prime slot, Saturday at 8:15 PM, on a big screen (the Printworks Odeon) and they are having a Prohibition-themed party with live music leading up to the showing. And the Manchester Evening News has named it one of 11 (out of 93!) “must-see” films in the festival. So we are feeling quite positive. There will be distributors at this festival, and we hope some will be interested in acquiring “There’s a Future in the Past” for broadcast/ release in theaters/ streaming/whatever new forms of showing films are invented in the next year. And thanks to a dozen or so Major Angels who helped us through the expensive thicket of music clearances over the past six months, we will be going to Manchester “rights ready.” We know that many of you are owed a DVD as your perk, and we have not forgotten that promise. Obviously Hudson West cannot distribute DVDs prior to the world premiere, and we do need to be able to offer Home Video as one of the options available to distributors in any deal they consider; so please be patient a little longer and know that as soon as DVDs are manufactured and for sale, we will send out your free thank-you DVD perk. Meanwhile, please tell your UK friends to come see the show! To honor the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I and the beginning of the Weimar Republic 100 years ago (1918-2018). This concert characterizes Berlin during the 1920’s and early 30’s as a time of change. The program includes works by Spoliansky, Hollaender, Berlin, Porter and more. Haan captivates as she brings to life a Germany suffering from the aftermath of the First World War. It is Germany’s Golden Age, a time of creativity, art, music and culture, of Brecht and Weill’s “Threepenny Opera”, the making of Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis”, the discovery of Marlene Dietrich starring as the “Naughty Lola” in Joseph von Sternberg’s “Blue Angel”. It’s also the time of Josephine Baker and her Charleston music; and the great American swing and jazz that transforms Berlin and other large German cities. Haan re-lives this bodacious period combining all these genres taking you on an enchanting musical voyage through history. More information

A time of challenge. A time of experiments. A time when traditions went down the drain. With the First World War lost and the Kaiser in exile, Germany began to experiment with a new form of government: the Weimar Republic was born and with it a nation longing for latitude. Come and celebrate the Golden Age, the dance on the volcano between the two World Wars. A time of creativity, art, music and culture, women’s movement and gay liberalization. Adding even more spice to the performance by featuring some beautiful burlesque dancers of Kiki’s Paper Dolls Troupe, Adrienne Haan is probing the ties between feminist struggle and female glamour, taking you on an enchanting musical voyage through history.

Vince Giordano has long been a top name in the jazz world. Born and raised in New York, he is a Grammy-winning musician that fluidly moves from one jazz-based instrument to the next. His passion for music dates back to when he was merely five years old, when he began amassing an assortment of 60,000 band arrangements, 1920s & ‘30s films, 78 recordings and jazz-age memorabilia. Obsessed with replicating the authentic sound of this period, he tracked down some of the era’s pioneers, including Whiteman’s top arranger Bill Challis, drummer Chauncey Morehouse, and bassist Joe Tarto, and learned the craft directly from them. After years working in the industry as a highly coveted musician, Giordano set about forming his own band (originally called the New Orleans Nighthawks). Since then, they’ve played all over, including black tie galas at the NY Public Library, the Waldorf Astoria and the Rainbow Room. Giordano himself has been seen playing at virtually every NYC jazz club, and is a fixture in the business. He’s portrayed jazz artists from all different time periods in film and TV, such as The Cotton Club, The Aviator, Finding Forrester, Revolutionary Road (and many more star-powered films), and HBO’s Boardwalk Empire (which he also contributed to the soundtrack of). A recent inductee into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame, Giordano has given much lauded concerts at Town Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Newport Jazz Festival and the 92nd St. Y over the last four decades.

Tatiana Eva-Marie and the Avalon Jazz Band Named a ‘rising jazz vocalist’ by Vanity Fair, the Franco-American Tatiana Eva-Marie steers the Avalon Jazz Band on a jaunty journey back in time, to the heyday of Parisian zazou and New York City’s Golden Age of swing. One listen to Eva-Marie and her smooth comrades, and you’re instantly transported to the 1930s and 40s, where swing was king and the classic jazz of France enchanted the night. Mingling these two flirty styles together, they create a melodious, internationally contoured pastiche, with tinges of Gypsy folk. For her green age, Eva-Marie is an accomplished performer, having played “Divas of the Silver Screen” at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Midsummer Night Swing Festival at Lincoln Center, NYC Winter Jazzfest, New York Hot Jazz Festival, “The Edith Piaf Centennial” at the Iridium, Carlyle, Joe’s Pub, The Rainbow Room Opening Night, French Embassy on Bastille Day, and New York City Opera gala at the Plaza. Current Avalon Jazz Band shows feature Eva-Marie on vocals, Adrien Chevalier (violin), Sara L’Abriola (guitar), Vinny Raniolo (guitar), Adrian Cunningham (reeds), Brandi Disterheft (bass), along with some select special guests. With Eva-Marie (who the Wall Street Journal also commended as “one of the best young singers around) at the helm, the Avalon Jazz Band devotedly tours all over, performing with a swinging and puckish spirit.

Aurura Nealand with her Royal Roses Aurora Nealand is an established bandleader, composer, performer and improviser. Nealand grew up in a musical family in California listening to Preservation Hall Jazz Band recordings side by side with Stravinsky, Joan Baez and the Pixies, and later, she fell in love with the recordings of Mingus, the soundscapes of Mort Subotnik and the performances of Laurie Anderson. Nealand has become a prominent force in the New Orleans music scene since she first arrived in 2005. Combining the “formal education” – a music composition degree from Oberlin Conservatory and training at the Jacques Lecoq School of Physical Theatre in Paris – with the “informal” experience of playing music in the streets and clubs of New Orleans and throughout the northern Hemisphere, Nealand has emerged as an innovative, sensitive and daring music creator and performer. She is most recognized for her performance on saxophones, clarinet and vocals and has been at the forefront of the revival of New Orleans Traditional Jazz. After playing in established New Orleans Bands for several years, (Panorama Jazz Band, VaVaVoom, The New Orleans Moonshiners), in 2010 she formed her own Traditional Jazz band “The Royal Roses.” The Royal Roses released its first album, “A Tribute to Sydney Bechet: Live at Preservation Hall” to national acclaim and Nealand was voted as one of Downbeat Magazine’s top rising stars for soprano saxophone from 2010 on.

One of Buster Keaton’s richest and funniest pictures–a brilliantly constructed succession of sight gags, action, suspense, thrills, and romance–is provided a live score of songs from the Twenties, as the acclaimed Vince Giordano and his Nighthawks return to Town Hall for this special family film in concert. Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks are renowned on the New York scene for their commitment to preserving and authentically presenting 1920s and ‘30s jazz and popular music. Giordano’s film credits include Public Enemies, The Aviator, and The Good Shepherd, and in 2012 Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks won a Grammy for their work on Boardwalk Empire. In the delightful silent classic The Cameraman, Buster Keaton is a Manhattan photographer who becomes a daredevil newsreel cameraman to win his sweetheart’s affections. The Cameraman bursts with ingenious sight gags as Buster plays an imaginary game of baseball in an empty Yankee Stadium, finds himself in a tight situation in a swimming pool dressing room, and gets mixed up with a monkey.

Through prevention and training, we will diminish the impact of these conditions and improve lives. Founded in 2002 by Dr. Karlene ChinQuee, Heartbeats of the World, Inc. evolved from a lifelong pursuit of humanitarian causes. When Dr. ChinQuee heard Maya Angelou speak about the problems in Jamaica and how people should feel empowered to do more to address them, she launched her own grassroots organization, and HOW transformed from an idea to a reality. In 2008, two hurricanes rendered inoperable our principal school on the island of Jamaica. Teaching is now done at a temporary facility. HOW desperately needs funds to construct a new school building and to help us expand our teaching activities.

Who is this eccentric musician who, for 40 years, has brought the past to life with his 11-member band The Nighthawks, a collection of more than 60,000 band arrangements, and a house full of vintage musical instruments? And what does it take to keep the Jazz Age going strong in 21st Century New York? And what does it take to keep the Jazz Age going strong in 21st Century New York? Fortunately, Giordano’s dedication has kept this joyful, energetic music alive long enough for a new generation of hot jazz virtuosos to discover it, and claim it for themselves. / Q&A with Vince Giordano and the filmmakers immediately following. / Ticket Prices: $5 Members / $7 General Public

The careers of performers who reside in the limelight are usually short-lived and over-overexposed. So it’s refreshing to encounter Leon Redbone, who has for decades remained so musically resonant and personally elusive. Though his iconic guise of white fedora, jacket and sunglasses has been thoroughly satirized (anybody remember the “Leon Redbone workout” Far Side cartoon?), it’s easy to overlook what a genuinely gifted artist he remains – a role he inevitably tries to downplay. “In some ways I’ve always been complacent in my approach to music,” Redbone says. “So in some ways maybe I’m the pure definition of consistent.” At the core of his initial calling was the desire to simply honor songs from the past – a waltz with bygone days that established him as sole curator of the museum of 20th century music. Over the course of his 30+ year, 15+ album career, the bard has continued his love affair with tunes from the turn-of-the-century (as in the second-to-last century), flapper-era radio ditties, Depression-spawned ragtime and World War II folk-jazz.

He’s known for his eccentric sense of humor and skilled instrumental talent. With his totally iconic guise of the signature Panama hat, jacket and sunglasses, it’s easy to get lost in the image and overlook what a gifted artist he remains – a role he tries to downplay. “In some ways I’ve always been complacent in my approach to music,” he says. “So in some ways maybe I’m the pure definition of consistent.” Redbone’s career first gained momentum in the early 70’s when Bob Dylan sought him out at The Mariposa Folk Festival, and then told Rolling Stone that if he ever stated a label, Redbone would be the first artist he would record. At the core of his initial calling to music was simply a desire to honor sons from the past – a waltz with bygone days that established him as a sole curator of the museum of the 20th Century music. Over the course of his amazing 30+ years and 15+ album career, this modern day bard has continued his love affair with times from the turn-of-the-century, clapper-era ditties, Depression forged Ragtime and WWII era folk-jazz. “Resolutely behind the times…Leon Redbone’s man-out-of-his-time shtick seems a quaint novelty in the mid 1970’s. while the rest of the world was twisting to disco, Redbone was recording standards from the ‘20’s and ‘30’s, performing them down tempo and with a resonant, clenched baritone that evoked the memory of the megaphone singers of yesteryear. Twenty-five years later, Redbone’s act is no longer a novelty, it’s a distinctive, warmly welcome persona that stands out on the musical landscape.” ~The Washington Post

There’s a Future in the Past chronicles Vince’s efforts to find gigs, save vintage arrangements from the dumpster, catalog his 60,000 scores, and pick up side sessions to pay the rent. The filmmakers will present scenes from the film. Q&A filmmakers Dave Davidson and Amber Edwards of Hudson West Productions, and bandleader Vince Giordano PERFORMANCE Grammy-winner Vince Giordano and the mini-Nighthawks will play a set of hot jazz and big band music of Boardwalk Empire’s prohibition era. Dave Davidson. 2014. 90 m. NR. USA. N/A. Wed. June 25 7:45 PM Tickets: $15 (members), $25 (nonmembers)

A Classic with a Jazz Twist

Ever wish you could be transported back in time to the innovation, spirit and glamour of the Jazz Age? Our opening night concert will be as close as it gets! The party starts with Gershwin’s masterworks, “Rhapsody in Blue” and the Piano Concerto in F, like you’ve never heard them before—in Ferde Grofé’s original Jazz Band arrangements for the legendary Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra.

Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, the Grammy winners renowned for their quintessentially authentic 1920s jazz band sound, join 2010 Gilmore Artist Kirill Gerstein, who is hailed for being equally virtuoso at classical and jazz piano. Maestro Maurice Peress—one time right-hand man to Leonard Bernstein and Duke Ellington—conducts.
